A fire has gutted a kitchen at River Cottage HQ, the famous home of TV chef Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall.

The fire broke out around 10.15 pm on Tuesday night in the events barn, which also contains a kitchen for the River Cottage’s cookery school.

Five appliances initially attended the incident, with firefighters requiring a further two to be called for water supply. The barn contained ten ovens for the cookery school, all of which had their own individual gas cylinders, and two large propane tanks in the building were also involved in the fire.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall himself was believed to be out of the country filming for an upcoming television programme.

It gave me food for thought and although it was almost disatrous it turned out for the best in the end!

I think its ok to say that through humour we can learn and we can identify with the film. To me the key is learning and being safe.

What did you learn or think about the film clip?

That fire training is a serious business and best done by professionals?

Please leave me a comment or contact me for a free no obligation chat to see how we can fire train you or your staff and make sure your safe at work or at home!

Thanks again for joining me on our blog and i look forward to your thoughts.

A landmark Glasgow building has been classified as a “dangerous” structure after fire ripped through it. Glasgow City Council said building control officers had carried out an inspection of the former Co-op Funeral Service building in Morrison Street. Two of the three buildings in the structure have been “gutted” with no floors from ground to fifth level. The third building is partially damaged. Fire crews continued to “damp down” the site. No-one was injured in the
blaze.

A spokesman for Glasgow City Council said: “This is now a dangerous building, and our building control team are now looking to speak to the building owners and their representatives to take the situation forward.” Read more

An external fire risk assessor and a hotel manager have both been jailed for eight months for fire safety offences.David Liu, who runs The Dial Hotel and Market Inn, both in Mansfield, had previously pleaded guilty to 15 offences under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, while John O’Rourke of Mansfield Fire Protection Services pleaded guilty to two offences under the legislation.

Sentencing the two defendants last Friday (8 July) at Nottingham Crown Court, the judge said that the time had come to send out a message to those who conduct fire risk assessments, and to hoteliers who are prepared to put profit before safety.

Officers from Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service visited both hotels as part of a routine inspection. They found that both premises were being used to provide sleeping accommodation on the upper floors and that fire precautions, which should have been provided to safeguard the occupants in the event of a fire, were inadequate.

Due to the serious risk to life, they issued prohibition notices preventing any further use of both premises for sleeping accommodation until suitable improvements had been made.

Mr O’Rourke was prosecuted because he had prepared fire risk assessments for both premises. However the fire risk assessments failed to identify a number of significant deficiencies, said the prosecution, which would have placed the occupants at serious risk in the event of a fire.

The offences common to both hotels to which Mr Liu, as the responsible person, pleaded guilty were:

A lack of a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment

A failure to ensure effective means of escape with doors leading onto corridors not being fire resisting or having self-closers fitted

A failure to ensure that emergency routes and exits were provided with emergency lighting

A failure to ensure the premises were equipped with appropriate firefighting equipment, detectors and alarms in that there was no fire detection within the bedrooms

A failure to ensure that equipment and devices provided were subject to a suitable system of maintenance in that the fire alarm system, emergency lighting system and firefighting equipment were not tested.

In addition at the Dial Hotel, officers found both staircases from upper levels terminating in the same ground floor area with no alternative escape routes or separation, a locked fire exit door, and exit routes obstructed by combustible materials.

The other offence at the Market Inn related to a missing fire door and a window not being fire resisting.

Mr Liu was also ordered to pay costs of £15,000.

John O’Rourke, as a person other than the responsible person who had some control of the premises, pleaded guilty to two counts (one for each hotel) of failing to provide a suitable and sufficient fire risk assessment. He was ordered to pay costs of £5,860.

The Glen Cinema Disaster of 31 December, 1929 in Paisley, Scotland, killed 69 children and injured 40; the final death toll was 71.

On the afternoon of 31 December 1929, during a children’s matinee, a freshly shown film was put in its metal can, in the spool room, where it began to issue thick black smoke. Nitrocellulose film, as used at this time, can burn on its own without needing any supply of air. Soon the smoke filled the auditorium containing about one thousand children.Panic set in. Children ran downstairs so fast and in such numbers that they piled up behind the escape door which led to Dyers Wynd. The door could not be opened, as it was designed to open inwards and was padlocked. The following day, Paisley was stunned by the news that seventy children had died in the crush in the worst cinema disaster in British history.

An inquiry was held in Edinburgh on 29 April 1930 during which it was revealed that the cinema had been inspected and pronounced safe by the Paisley fire brigade on the morning of the fire. The owner, James Graham, had, however, agreed that there were insufficient exits, but claimed he had repeatedly reminded the manager, Charles Dorward, that the escape exits were not to be shut during matinee performances. The manager conceded that the exit gates had sometimes been locked to prevent children from entering the cinema without paying. A policeman who arrived on the scene just after the fire started reported that the gates were padlocked; however, another witness confirmed that she had seen Dorward unlock them. It remained unclear as to why the gates had been padlocked but there was a suggestion that it had been done by two boys. The conclusion of the inquiry was that the fire had been started by a short circuit when a metal box containing film stock had been placed on the top of a battery in the projection room. The tragedy had been made worse by the limited number of exits, insufficient attendants and overcrowding.

A relief fund for the injured children and bereaved parents raised £5,300: Paisley Town Council offered them a week’s holiday at the seaside.

Safety regulations were tightened in the wake of the disaster; many municipal authorities made inspections of cinemas compulsory. The Cinematograph Act 1909 was amended to ensure that cinemas had more exits, that doors opened outwards and that they were fitted with push bars. A limitation was also placed on the seating capacity of cinemas <a title="read more" href="On the afternoon of 31 December 1929, during a children's matinee, a freshly shown film was put in its metal can, in the spool room, where it began to issue thick black smoke.
I have seen them in all sorts of types of workplaces in the last few years in places like:

Nurseries

Office corridors

Hotels

Accountants offices

HMO accommodation

Its true that dry powder fire extinguishers can deal with fire classes such as A B C and fires involving electricity but should never be considered as a one does all solution to your hazards and fire loading.

Its true that they are the only type of fire extinguisher that can deal with fires involving gases.

Imagine a 2 kg dry powder fire extinguisher in this way!

What would it look like if you threw 2 kg of baby powder around your place?

How long would it take to clean up?

Facts to bear in mind if you have one or someone tries to sell you one:

They effectively destroy electrical components such as computers, servers and photocopiers.

They reduce visibility and can hinder you finding an escape route.

They may aggravate respiratory problems such as asthma.

They make you cough, splutter and irritate your eyes.

Watch this video I made outdoors and make your own mind up then ponder the questions after here.

Click here to view the video on YouTube.

Look at where they are sited, whats the hazard they are there to deal with?

What do you think now?

Would you have one in your type of business now?

Have you been provisioned correctly by your fire extinguisher company or sold things you don’t need?

Thanks for taking the time to read this and if you have any questions then please call me at any time on 07894900244.

Best regards again
